Google Fitbit is reportedly preparing a major transformation by rebranding the Fitbit app into Google Health, bringing AI-powered personalised coaching to millions of users worldwide. The update is expected to roll out in India by mid-May 2026.

The company aims to combine fitness tracking, wellness monitoring, sleep analysis and health management into a single ecosystem powered by Google’s Gemini AI technology.

What Is Google Health Coach?

The upcoming Google Health Coach feature is expected to provide AI-assisted guidance based on a user’s health data and daily activity patterns. According to reports, the platform may offer:

  • Personalised workout suggestions
  • Sleep optimisation tips
  • Lifestyle improvement guidance
  • Activity and recovery insights

The AI system is designed to analyse wearable data collected through Fitbit and Pixel devices to generate customised health recommendations.

AI Coaching and Fitness: What Research Says

Several studies suggest that AI-powered wearable technology may help improve athletic performance and injury prevention for trained athletes. However, experts note that there is limited evidence proving similar effectiveness for regular users focused on daily fitness and wellness.

Research published in journals including JAMA and Frontiers in Digital Health reportedly found that:

  • AI coaching can improve user engagement
  • Data interpretation plays a key role
  • Human coaching may still outperform AI in motivation and adherence

Experts also warn that excessive screen usage before sleep may negatively impact sleep quality despite AI-generated sleep recommendations.

India Pricing and Availability

Google Health Premium is expected to launch in India at:

  • Rs 99 per month
  • Rs 999 per year

Initially, the service may only be available for Fitbit and Pixel users.

Privacy and Data Concerns

While AI-assisted healthcare tools may improve preventive care and health awareness, concerns remain around:

  • Personal data collection
  • Privacy protection
  • Over-dependence on AI systems
  • Lack of human medical supervision

Experts stress that AI health coaches are not replacements for doctors or medical diagnosis. Instead, they should be viewed as supportive wellness tools for preventive healthcare.

Impact on Digital Health in India

The integration of AI with wearable devices could significantly influence India’s digital healthcare ecosystem. Industry experts believe such platforms may:

  • Expand preventive healthcare awareness
  • Improve scalable health monitoring
  • Support public-private digital health initiatives

However, researchers also say that long-term effectiveness and suitability for individual users still require deeper evaluation.
