Marathi Pronunciation Sparks Controversy in Maharashtra Assembly
A controversy erupted in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly after Speaker Rahul Narwekar mispronounced several Marathi words while reading obituary references during the Monsoon Session.
The Speaker later expressed regret, clarifying that the mistakes were unintentional and caused by technical issues and an unclear printed copy of the speech.
Speaker Explains the Reason Behind the Error
Addressing the House, Rahul Narwekar said the incorrect pronunciations occurred because of technical difficulties and poor print quality of the prepared speech.
He stated that there was no intention to hurt anyone’s sentiments.
“If anyone’s feelings have been hurt because of this incident, I sincerely express my regret. It was completely unintentional,” the Speaker said.
‘I Am Proud of the Marathi Language’
Narwekar emphasized that he has immense respect and pride for the Marathi language.
He pointed out that he has delivered several speeches in Marathi in the past and reiterated that the incident should not be interpreted as disrespect toward the language.
His clarification came after criticism over the pronunciation of Marathi names while reading condolence messages for renowned personalities and former legislators.
Raj Thackeray Criticises the Incident
The controversy intensified after Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray strongly criticized the Speaker.
Raj Thackeray alleged that while reading the obituary reference for legendary singer Asha Bhosle, Narwekar incorrectly referred to her father, legendary singer and actor Dinanath Mangeshkar, as “Deendayal Mangeshkar.”
He questioned why no MLA in the Assembly objected to the mistake.
Social Media Reaction
In a social media post, Raj Thackeray remarked that the condolence resolution appeared to be “for the Marathi language rather than for Asha Bhosle.”
He further commented that even if the speech had been delivered in another language, it would have made little difference because the Marathi pronunciation was difficult to understand.
His remarks quickly gained attention online, triggering widespread political debate.
