Bihar Farmer’s Cucumber Farming Becomes a Success Story
A farmer from Bihar’s Gaya district is inspiring cultivators across the country after earning nearly ₹4 lakh in just 60 days through hybrid cucumber farming.
By adopting modern farming techniques and high-yield hybrid varieties, the farmer has transformed a small piece of land into a profitable agricultural venture.
Hybrid Cucumber Delivers Impressive Returns
Young farmer Dharmendra Kumar, from Chandauti in Gaya district, has cultivated both local and hybrid cucumber varieties on around three bighas of land.
Among them, the Malini hybrid cucumber variety has delivered exceptional results.
The crop is ready for harvest in about 60 days, making it one of the fastest-growing and most profitable vegetable crops during the summer season.
150 Quintals Harvested from 1.5 Bigha
According to the farmer, nearly 150 quintals of cucumbers have been harvested from 1.5 bighas of hybrid cultivation.
During the peak harvesting period, he harvested around 10 to 12 quintals of cucumbers every day.
The produce is supplied to the Gaya wholesale market, where prices currently range between ₹20 and ₹25 per kilogram, helping him generate substantial daily income.
Daily Income Reaches ₹15,000–20,000
Dharmendra Kumar says he is currently earning around ₹15,000 to ₹20,000 per day from cucumber sales.
Within just two months, the hybrid crop alone has generated an estimated income of ₹2–3 lakh, while the local cucumber variety is expected to provide additional earnings as harvesting continues.
Modern Farming Techniques Boost Production
The farmer credits his success to the use of drip irrigation and plastic mulching, which help conserve water, improve soil moisture and increase crop productivity.
He also received financial assistance from the Agriculture Department for installing the drip irrigation and mulching systems.
These techniques have significantly reduced water consumption while improving overall yield.
Farming Expanded Beyond Cucumbers
Apart from cucumbers, Dharmendra has leased around 14 bighas of farmland, where he cultivates various vegetables throughout the year.
Having practiced cucumber farming for the past four years, he continues to expand his agricultural operations using modern cultivation methods.
Experts Highlight Growing Potential
Agriculture experts believe hybrid cucumber cultivation can become a profitable option for farmers due to its:
- Short crop duration
- High market demand
- Quick returns
- Efficient water usage through drip irrigation
- Better productivity with mulching technology
However, they also advise farmers to evaluate local climate conditions, input costs, irrigation availability and market demand before adopting large-scale cultivation.
