Main Drinking Water Pipeline Bursts During Development Work in Karamadai
Residents of Karamadai Municipality in Tamil Nadu have expressed concern after a major drinking water pipeline was damaged during ongoing pipeline connection work, resulting in continuous water wastage for several days.
The incident occurred near Ayyappan Temple on the Mettupalayam–Karamadai Road, where the municipality had begun excavation work to improve water supply for Wards 2, 3, and 7.
New Pipeline Project Aimed to Solve Water Shortage
For a long time, residents of Sivanpuram in Wards 2 and 3 have been struggling with an inadequate drinking water supply.
To address the issue, the municipal administration launched a project to connect a new water pipeline from the main distribution line, ensuring better drinking water access for residents in Wards 2, 3, and 7.
However, during excavation work last week, the main pipeline was accidentally damaged.
Drinking Water Continues to Flow Unchecked
Following the pipeline rupture, drinking water has been continuously flowing out day and night, leading to significant wastage of treated water.
Local residents claim that despite informing municipal employees about the damaged pipeline, no repair work has been carried out so far.
The prolonged leakage has raised concerns over both water conservation and public resource management.
Residents Demand Immediate Action
People living in the Sivanpuram Colony have urged municipal authorities to act without further delay.
Residents said the continuous leakage is unacceptable, especially when several areas are already facing drinking water shortages. They demanded that officials immediately repair the damaged pipeline and prevent further wastage.
Councillor Explains the Delay
Ward 2 Councillor Guruprasad stated that the pipeline damage occurred because the excavation site contains rocky terrain near the Ayyappan Temple.
According to him, an existing GI (Galvanized Iron) pipeline was installed in the area, and while digging trenches for the new connection, the main water pipeline was accidentally damaged.
He explained that shutting down the water supply immediately to repair the break would leave residents in multiple wards without drinking water.
Repair Work Expected Soon
The councillor added that the municipality is currently waiting for a required black pipeline needed to connect with the existing iron pipeline.
He said the material was expected to arrive shortly, after which repair work on the damaged pipeline would be completed immediately and normal water distribution restored.
Municipal authorities have assured residents that the issue will be resolved at the earliest to prevent further water loss.
