PM Modi Pays Tribute to Defenders of Democracy
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday paid homage to all those who stood firm in defending democratic values during the Emergency, describing the period as one of the darkest chapters in India’s democratic history.
Marking Samvidhan Hatya Diwas, the Prime Minister remembered political leaders, journalists, social workers and ordinary citizens who opposed the Emergency and protected the spirit of the Constitution despite facing immense hardships.
Emergency Was an Assault on the Constitution
In a post shared on X, Prime Minister Modi said the Emergency represented a direct attack on India’s Constitution and democratic institutions.
He noted that civil liberties were suspended, freedom of expression was curtailed, and several political leaders, journalists and social activists were arrested during the period.
According to the Prime Minister, the Emergency remains a reminder of the importance of safeguarding democratic institutions and constitutional values.
Courage of Citizens Remembered
While describing the Emergency as a dark phase in India’s history, the Prime Minister also highlighted the extraordinary courage displayed by countless citizens who refused to remain silent.
He said their determination to uphold constitutional ideals continues to inspire future generations and serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting democracy.
Constitution Reflects Aspirations of 140 Crore Indians
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to constitutional values, Prime Minister Modi said the Constitution embodies the aspirations, rights and duties of 140 crore Indians.
He stated that India will continue to strengthen its democratic foundations while remaining committed to the principles of justice, liberty, equality and fraternity.
PM Shares Sanskrit Verse
The Prime Minister also shared a Sanskrit Subhashitam emphasizing the importance of freedom and constitutional values.
“स्वातन्त्र्यात् सुखमाप्नोति स्वातन्त्र्याल्लभते परम्।
स्वातन्त्र्यान्निर्वृत्तिं गच्छेत् स्वातन्त्र्यात् परमं पदम्।।”
The verse highlights that true happiness, fulfillment and the highest ideals are achieved through freedom.
