PM Modi Cabinet Reshuffle 2026: Vijayasai Reddy Seeks New Ministry for Peninsular India
The Union Cabinet reshuffle is expected to take place before the Monsoon Session of Parliament, which is likely to begin in the third week of July. As discussions over ministerial changes gather pace, former YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) Rajya Sabha MP Vijayasai Reddy has made a significant proposal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Reddy has urged the Prime Minister to establish a dedicated ministry for the planned development of Peninsular India, similar to the existing Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER).
Cabinet Reshuffle Expected Before Parliament Session
According to political reports, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is reviewing the composition of the Union Council of Ministers ahead of the upcoming Parliament session.
The reshuffle is expected to include:
- Induction of new ministers
- Portfolio changes
- Organisational changes within the BJP
- Performance-based evaluation of ministers
However, the government has not officially announced the reshuffle schedule.
Vijayasai Reddy’s Proposal
In his appeal, Vijayasai Reddy suggested creating a separate ministry focused exclusively on the development of India’s coastal and peninsular states.
He said such a ministry could accelerate growth in sectors including:
- Maritime Trade
- Ports and Shipping
- Manufacturing
- Tourism
- Blue Economy
- Logistics Infrastructure
- Coastal Industrial Corridors
According to Reddy, a dedicated institution would help unlock the economic potential of India’s long coastline.
Why a Separate Ministry?
Reddy argued that just as the DoNER Ministry focuses on the development of India’s North Eastern states, a similar ministry for Peninsular India could provide coordinated planning and faster implementation of infrastructure projects.
He believes this initiative would contribute to the vision of Viksit Bharat while strengthening India’s maritime economy.
Political Significance
The proposal comes at a time when Vijayasai Reddy is no longer associated with the YSR Congress Party and has also resigned from the Rajya Sabha.
Political observers note that Reddy was once considered to have strong access to the Prime Minister’s Office during his tenure as a senior YSRCP leader. Whether the Centre considers his latest suggestion remains to be seen.
Government Yet to Respond
As of now, neither the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) nor the Union Government has officially responded to Vijayasai Reddy’s proposal.
Similarly, there has been no official confirmation regarding the creation of any new ministry as part of the upcoming Cabinet reshuffle.
What is the DoNER Ministry?
The Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) is responsible for planning, coordinating and monitoring development projects in the eight northeastern states of India.
Vijayasai Reddy has proposed creating a similar institution dedicated to India’s coastal and peninsular regions.
