Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Waits for India Debut
Teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was left out of India’s playing XI for the first T20 International against Ireland despite earning his maiden national team call-up.
The 15-year-old attracted widespread attention after being included in India’s squad for the two-match T20I series and was seen training extensively with head coach Gautam Gambhir and the coaching staff ahead of the opening match.
Shreyas Iyer Explains Selection Decision
At the toss, newly-appointed India captain Shreyas Iyer clarified why the youngster was not included in the starting lineup.
“He is a gun player, but we have some tremendous players who have done well for us, so we are backing them. He will get his chance when the time comes,” Iyer said.
India opted to bowl first after winning the toss.

Had Sooryavanshi made his debut, he would have become the youngest player ever to represent India in international cricket at 15 years and 91 days.

The decision to leave Sooryavanshi out was largely influenced by India’s settled top-order.

Batting Coach Backs Merit-Based Selection
India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak also defended the selection policy ahead of the match.
He said opportunities should not come at the expense of players who are already performing well for the national team.
According to Kotak, there is a fine balance between rewarding emerging talent and remaining fair to players who have consistently contributed to India’s success.

Kotak acknowledged that India’s incredible depth in T20 cricket has made team selection increasingly difficult.
He praised the BCCI’s domestic structure for continuously producing talented youngsters while emphasizing that established performers deserve continued backing until their form declines.
The coaching staff remains confident that Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will receive his opportunity when the right time arrives.
