Why Did the Dispute Reach Supreme Court? 🏛️
The conflict began after disagreements emerged between the West Bengal government and the Governor regarding the appointment process of Vice Chancellors.
As Chancellor of state universities, the Governor plays a key role in approving VC appointments. The prolonged deadlock led the matter to reach the Supreme Court.
To resolve the issue, the court had earlier constituted a search-cum-selection committee headed by former Chief Justice of India U. U. Lalit.
Supreme Court Approved Final VC Names ✅
A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi formally closed the matter on Friday after approving the final pending recommendations.
The three universities where appointments were still pending are:
- Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology
- University of North Bengal
- Netaji Subhas Open University
The court directed the West Bengal government to forward the approved names to Governor RN Ravi for further action.
