How Vietnam Airlines Is Preparing for the Future of Aviation

Vietnam Airlines Focuses on Long-Term Growth Amid Global Aviation Headwinds

As the global aviation industry faces rising fuel prices, supply chain disruptions and geopolitical uncertainties, Vietnam Airlines is positioning itself for sustainable long-term growth through operational efficiency, international expansion, fleet modernization and digital transformation.

Rather than chasing short-term growth, the national carrier is investing in strategies designed to improve resilience and strengthen its competitive position in the years ahead.

Global Aviation Faces Fresh Challenges

According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), global passenger traffic surpassed 5 billion passengers in 2025, while airline industry revenue is expected to exceed $1 trillion.

Despite strong demand, airlines continue to face significant challenges, including:

  • Rising jet fuel prices
  • Geopolitical tensions
  • Aircraft delivery delays
  • Supply chain disruptions
  • Increasing regulatory costs

Industry experts note that airline profitability remains under pressure despite record passenger numbers.

Management attributed the strong performance to flexible route planning, disciplined cost control and improved fleet utilization.

International Network Continues to Expand

Expanding international connectivity remains one of the airline’s key strategic priorities.

During 2025, Vietnam Airlines launched or restored 14 international routes, increasing its network to 113 routes connecting 39 international destinations across 22 countries and territories.

In 2026, the airline plans to introduce new services to:

  • Amsterdam
  • Phuket
  • Colombo

It is also increasing frequencies on several high-demand routes, including Moscow, Manila, Melbourne, Sydney and Singapore.

Digital Transformation Becomes a Key Growth Driver

Vietnam Airlines is accelerating its digital transformation to improve customer experience and operational efficiency.

Recent initiatives include:

  • In-flight internet services
  • Biometric check-in using Vietnam’s VNeID platform
  • Lounge check-in services at Ho Chi Minh City’s Terminal 3
  • Expansion of Lotus Lounge facilities

The airline believes these innovations will enhance passenger convenience while creating new revenue opportunities.

Fleet Expansion Planned for the Next Decade

To support future demand, Vietnam Airlines is investing heavily in fleet modernization.

The airline plans to:

  • Purchase 50 next-generation narrow-body aircraft for delivery between 2030 and 2032.
  • Lease an additional 20 aircraft during 2027–2028.
  • Introduce its first dedicated cargo aircraft in 2026 to strengthen its air logistics business.

The company is also preparing infrastructure investments at major airports, including the upcoming Long Thanh International Airport.

Building Resilience for the Future

With fuel prices, geopolitical risks and supply chain challenges expected to remain unpredictable, Vietnam Airlines believes long-term resilience will be the defining factor for success.

By combining operational excellence, international expansion, digital innovation and strategic fleet investments, the carrier aims to build a stronger and more sustainable business capable of navigating future industry uncertainties.
