Spirit Airlines Shuts Down Suddenly: Passengers Stranded, Political Blame Game Intensifies in US

In a shocking development, Spirit Airlines has officially ceased operations after more than three decades in the aviation industry, leaving thousands of passengers stranded across the United States.

The airline announced an immediate shutdown in the early hours, stating it had begun an “orderly wind-down” of services. Airports across the country saw empty check-in counters and canceled flights, with no staff available to assist confused travelers.

US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy urged passengers not to head to airports for Spirit flights, confirming that operations had completely stopped. Authorities are now working on measures to help affected passengers get refunds or find alternative flights at discounted rates.

The airline’s final flight landed in Dallas just after midnight, marking the end of its 34-year journey. CEO Dave Davis stated that the company had hoped to secure financial support but failed at the last moment.

Many travelers shared frustration and disappointment. Some reported missing important events due to expensive last-minute ticket prices on other airlines, which surged up to $600 or more.

As the situation unfolded, a political blame game quickly followed. Republican leaders blamed the Biden administration for blocking a proposed $3.8 billion merger between JetBlue and Spirit, arguing that the deal could have saved the airline.

On the other hand, Democrats pointed to rising fuel costs linked to tensions involving Iran as a major factor in the airline’s collapse. Senator Elizabeth Warren stated that increasing operational costs had pushed the already struggling airline over the edge.

Meanwhile, officials clarified that Spirit had faced financial instability for years, including multiple bankruptcy filings, suggesting that deeper structural issues were also responsible.

For many travelers, Spirit represented one of the last truly low-cost flying options. Its sudden exit is expected to impact budget travel significantly in the US market.
