Ferguson Praises Sears’ Pace as New Zealand Bounce Back Strongly Against South Africa
New Zealand made an impressive comeback in the T20I series against South Africa, turning things around after a disappointing start. From being bowled out for just 91 in Mount Maunganui, the hosts responded brilliantly with a competitive 175/6 in Hamilton and secured a convincing 68-run victory.
Fast bowler Lockie Ferguson credited the turnaround to the team’s ability to quickly adjust to changing conditions.
“We always talk about adapting as a group. It sounds simple, but it’s not always easy when the pitch doesn’t behave as expected,” Ferguson said ahead of the third T20I. “The Hamilton match was a great example of how quickly we adapted. I felt 175 was a very strong total on that surface.”
He also praised Devon Conway, who anchored the innings with a solid 60 despite challenging batting conditions. According to Ferguson, Conway’s effort was crucial in helping New Zealand reach a defendable total.
Ferguson, who returned to the side after missing the first T20I, expressed his joy at playing at home again following injury setbacks earlier in the summer. He highlighted the collective effort of the bowling unit, saying the pressure created from both ends made a big difference.
The pacer had special praise for Ben Sears, who impressed with his pace and picked up three wickets.
“I think he still has more pace in him,” Ferguson said. “But what’s exciting is the work he’s been putting in. He’s constantly improving—working on variations, asking questions, and pushing himself in training. That development will be important for his future.”
Ferguson added that Sears’ ability to generate extra bounce and trouble batters has been a big plus for the team.
Looking ahead to the next match at Eden Park, Ferguson acknowledged the unique challenges of the venue. Known for its short boundaries and lively atmosphere, Eden Park often produces high-scoring encounters.
“It can be intimidating, especially with the short straight boundaries and the crowd right behind you,” he said. “But it’s also one of the best places to play. The support is amazing, and the games are always exciting.”
Off the field, Ferguson is also enjoying a special phase in his personal life. His newborn son recently attended his first match, making the moment even more memorable for the fast bowler.
With momentum now on their side, New Zealand will look to continue their strong performance as the series moves forward.
