Tamil Nadu TET Result 2026: 1.11 Lakh Teachers Fail, Another Chance Ahead

Tamil Nadu Special TET Result 2026: 1.11 Lakh Government School Teachers Fail

More than 1.11 lakh in-service government school teachers in Tamil Nadu have failed the Special Teacher Eligibility Test (TET), according to a report published by Polimer News on October 13, 2026. Of the 2,20,464 teachers who appeared for the examination conducted in July, 1,11,683 did not qualify.

The results have drawn attention to the eligibility requirements for teachers appointed before the implementation of the Right to Education (RTE) Act in 2010. However, teachers who did not qualify may have another opportunity before the deadline reported by the School Education Department.

Tamil Nadu Special TET Result 2026: Key Statistics

The examination covered two categories of government school teachers: secondary-grade teachers and graduate teachers.

Exam CategoryTeachers AppearedTeachers Failed
Paper 1 – Secondary-grade teachers59,53511,907
Paper 2 – Graduate teachers1,60,92999,776

According to these figures, approximately 50.66% of the teachers who appeared for the examination did not qualify.

Paper 2 accounted for the largest share of unsuccessful candidates, with 99,776 graduate teachers failing to meet the qualifying requirements.

Why Was the Special TET Conducted?

The examination followed a Supreme Court direction concerning Teacher Eligibility Test requirements for certain teachers appointed before the RTE Act came into effect in 2010.

Under the reported arrangement, eligible in-service teachers were required to pass the TET, subject to the applicable rules and exemptions. Teachers expected to retire within five years were reportedly exempted from appearing for this examination.

A total of 2,20,464 teachers took the test in July 2026.

Paper 1 and Paper 2 Results
Paper 1: Secondary-Grade Teachers

A total of 59,535 secondary-grade teachers appeared for Paper 1. Of these, 11,907 failed to qualify.

The number represents approximately 20% of candidates in this category.

Paper 2: Graduate Teachers

Paper 2 had 1,60,929 graduate teachers appearing for the examination. Among them, 99,776 failed to qualify.

This means approximately 62% of Paper 2 candidates did not pass, making it the category with the higher number and proportion of unsuccessful candidates.

Will Teachers Who Failed the TET Lose Their Jobs?

The possibility of employment consequences is a major concern for teachers who did not qualify.

According to the Polimer News report, a court direction requires teachers covered by the eligibility rules to pass the examination, with failure potentially leading to termination of service.

However, the report also states that the School Education Department indicated that teachers would have another opportunity because time remains until August 2028.

The precise consequences for individual teachers may depend on the applicable court directions, service rules, exemptions and subsequent government orders. Teachers should therefore refer to official notifications from the Tamil Nadu School Education Department before drawing conclusions about their employment status.

Another Opportunity Before August 2028

The reported timeline suggests that unsuccessful candidates may have additional time to meet the eligibility requirements.

Teachers who did not qualify should monitor official announcements regarding the next examination, application dates, syllabus, qualifying marks and other instructions.

No additional examination date should be assumed until it is officially announced.

What Happens Next?

The results leave more than 1.11 lakh teachers facing the need to qualify in a future opportunity, subject to the rules applicable to their appointments.

The next steps will depend on official decisions by the Tamil Nadu School Education Department and any further directions from the courts.

Teachers are advised to verify their individual eligibility and service conditions through official channels rather than relying solely on media summaries.
