Hesson Backs Pakistan’s New Faces Ahead of Bangladesh ODI Series
Pakistan coach Mike Hesson has backed a new-look squad ahead of the upcoming ODI series against Pakistan national cricket team’s tour of Bangladesh national cricket team, saying several emerging players have earned their opportunities after impressive performances with Pakistan Shaheens and in domestic cricket.
Pakistan have included six uncapped players in the squad, with Hesson describing the group as an exciting blend of experienced cricketers and promising young talent.
Speaking ahead of Pakistan’s first training session in Dhaka, Hesson said the team management wants to test new players in challenging overseas conditions.
“It is an exciting group. We have got some fresh faces that have done well in the Shaheens. They have earned the right to get some opportunities at the next level,” Hesson said.
“Our challenge over here is adapting to the pitch quickly. Regardless of what’s thrown at us, we must make sure we have a team ready to challenge Bangladesh in their own conditions.”
Pakistan Looking to Continue ODI Momentum
Hesson also highlighted Pakistan’s strong performances in recent ODI series, saying the team hopes to maintain that form despite the introduction of new players.
“Our last two one-day series have been exceptional. We won both very convincingly and played solid cricket. We got runs at the top of the order, which always helps,” he said.
However, he acknowledged that the Bangladesh series will be a major test for the newcomers, who will have to adapt quickly to international cricket.
Focus on Young Talent After Babar Azam Omission
The squad announcement attracted attention due to the absence of Babar Azam. However, Hesson avoided describing it as a “dropping” and instead emphasized the opportunity to test younger players.
“I don’t think anyone particularly was dropped. It’s a great opportunity for us to look at some younger talent,” Hesson explained.
Among the players highlighted by Hesson were Sahibzada Farhan, Shamyl Hussain, and Maaz Sadaqat, who have impressed in domestic cricket and Pakistan Shaheens performances.
He praised Farhan for his performances in the T20 World Cup and domestic competitions, while Shamyl Hussain was the highest run-scorer in first-class cricket and also excelled in List-A matches.
Dhaka Pitch Conditions Appear Improved
All three ODIs will be played at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka. When Pakistan last played a T20I series at the venue in July, Hesson had criticized the pitch, calling it below international standards.
This time, however, he believes conditions look significantly better.
“Without doubt, it looks like a far better pitch and better coverage than before. There seems to be more grass cover and it could offer a genuine contest between bat and ball,” he said.
Hesson added that improved pitch conditions would benefit both teams and help produce competitive cricket.
ODI Series Schedule
Pakistan will face Bangladesh in a three-match ODI series:
- 1st ODI: Wednesday
- 2nd ODI: March 13
- 3rd ODI: March 15
All matches will be played in Dhaka at the Shere Bangla National Stadium.
