Avatar 3 Box Office: Fire and Ash Launches With $88M Amid Franchise Expectations

James Cameron’s Avatar 3 has delivered a massive start at the box office, emerging as the third-highest opening weekend grosser of 2025. Early reports suggest that the film outperformed expectations with a strong worldwide debut.

The movie’s groundbreaking visuals, immersive 3D experience, and expansion of the Pandoran storyline drew large crowds to theatres. Critics praised the emotional depth and world-building, noting that Cameron once again pushes cinematic boundaries.

Box-office analysts predict that earnings may climb further in the coming days, boosted by the holiday season and positive word of mouth. With its strong performance overseas as well, the film is on track to surpass earlier global projections.

The record-setting opening signals the enduring appeal of the Avatar franchise and demonstrates that high-concept sci-fi paired with cutting-edge visual effects continues to captivate audiences worldwide.

James Cameron’s latest sci-fi epic Avatar: Fire and Ash has recorded a powerful global debut, becoming the third-highest opening weekend grosser of 2025, according to industry estimates. The film collected around USD 345 million worldwide within its first three days of release.

Only two films have achieved higher openings this year: Disney’s Zootopia 2 with approximately USD 560.30 million, and China’s animated sequel Ne Zha 2, which opened to USD 431.20 million globally.

Though Fire and Ash posted an impressive start, it did not match the debut earnings of Avatar: The Way of Water (USD 441.70 million). Still, the film opened ahead of the 2009 original Avatar, which had earned roughly USD 241 million during its launch weekend.

In North America, Fire and Ash grossed USD 88 million over the weekend. This figure trails behind the USD 134.10 million opening of The Way of Water, but surpasses the USD 77 million first-weekend earnings of the franchise’s first entry, according to Box Office Mojo.

International markets contributed USD 257 million, lower than the USD 307.60 million earned overseas by The Way of Water during the same period.

The biggest overseas collections came from major markets such as:

  • China – USD 57.6 million
  • France – USD 21.4 million
  • Germany – USD 18 million

In India, the movie collected USD 9.2 million (₹82 crore gross) in three days, which is significantly below the ₹157 crore gross opening weekend posted by The Way of Water.

However, industry tracker Sacnilk reports that Avatar: Fire and Ash earned approximately ₹67.25 crore nett in India over the same period, making it the highest opening weekend for a Hollywood film in India in 2025.
