Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is evaluating a landmark partnership with Russia’s Sukhoi Design Bureau to domestically manufacture the Su-57E fifth-generation stealth fighter, a move that could significantly bolster the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) combat capability during a critical transition period.
According to media reports, Sukhoi submitted a feasibility study to HAL in November 2025, assessing India’s readiness for Su-57 production at nearly 50 per cent, leveraging over two decades of Su-30MKI manufacturing experience. A final cost analysis from Russian experts is expected shortly, after which HAL will submit its recommendation to the defence ministry.
The Su-57 is being considered as an interim stealth platform, not a replacement for Rafale, to bridge the capability gap until India’s indigenous AMCA enters service around 2034–35.
The proposal gains urgency as China’s People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) rapidly expands its stealth fleet, with over 250 J-20 fighters already operational and forward deployments detected in Tibet close to the Line of Actual Control.

⚔️ WHY IT MATTERS (KEY POINTS)
- 🇨🇳 China inducted ~120 J-20 stealth fighters in 2025 alone
- 🛑 IAF currently operates ZERO fifth-generation fighters
- 📉 Squadron strength down to ~31 vs sanctioned 42
- 🕳️ 8–10 year capability gap before AMCA induction
- ✈️ Su-57 offers stealth + long range + super-manoeuvrability
- 🧠 Unprecedented source code & tech transfer on offer
🛩️ SU-57E AT A GLANCE
- Max speed: Mach 2.0
- Combat range: ~1,900 km
- Payload: 7,400 kg
- Key missile: R-37M (300+ km BVR range)
- Feature: 3D thrust-vectoring, internal weapons bays

🌏 STRATEGIC CONTEXT
- PLAAF aims for ~1,000 J-20s by 2030
- J-20s already deployed at Shigatse airbase, ~150 km from Sikkim
- China offering J-35 stealth fighter to Pakistan
- US F-35 option constrained by CAATSA, tech lock-ins & weapon integration limits
🏭 PRODUCTION & COST ESTIMATE
- Assembly at HAL’s Nashik facility
- Initial 36–54 jets fly-away (2028–30)
- Total induction proposed: 60–80 aircraft
- Estimated cost: $50–65 million per jet
- Below Rafale & F-35 acquisition costs

🔮 WHAT INDIA IS LIKELY TO DO
- Use Su-57 as time-bound interim solution
- Keep AMCA funding & timeline untouched
- Integrate Astra, Rudram, BrahMos-A
- Limit production rate to protect quality
