Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav has spoken about his financial difficulties after the Delhi High Court refused to grant him additional time to pay dues in a cheque bounce case, directing him to surrender before jail authorities.
According to media reports, the actor emotionally addressed the court, stating that he was facing severe financial constraints and had no immediate means to resolve the situation. Rajpal Yadav reportedly told the court that he was dealing with the crisis on his own and was unable to arrange the required funds within the given time.
His legal counsel informed the court that the actor had managed to arrange ₹50 lakh and requested a one-week extension to clear the remaining amount. This request followed a court order dated February 2, which instructed Yadav to surrender by 4 pm on February 4.
However, Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma dismissed the plea for extension, observing that the court could not create special exceptions based on an individual’s profession or background. The judge noted that while leniency can be considered in certain cases, repeated non-compliance cannot be ignored indefinitely.
The case stems from a complaint filed by M/s Murali Projects Pvt Ltd against Rajpal Yadav and his wife, alleging that multiple cheques issued by them were dishonoured and the outstanding dues were not repaid.
In 2018, a Delhi magistrate’s court convicted the couple in the cheque bounce matter and sentenced the actor to six months of imprisonment. The conviction was later upheld by a sessions court in 2019, after which the matter reached the Delhi High Court.
In June 2024, the High Court had temporarily stayed the proceedings and advised the actor to make genuine efforts to settle the dispute amicably. However, the court later noted that the directions were not complied with, leading to the February 2 order directing him to surrender.
Rajpal Yadav is widely recognised for his comic roles and supporting performances in popular Hindi films such as Phir Hera Pheri, Chup Chup Ke, Garam Masala, Bhool Bhulaiyaa and Partner. With a career spanning over two decades, he has remained a prominent figure in Bollywood’s comedy genre.
In recent years, the actor has appeared in films including Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, Dream Girl 2, Shehzada, Satyaprem Ki Katha and Baby John. Apart from acting, he also made his directorial debut with the 2012 film Ata Pata Laapata.
