India’s Ambassador-designate to Japan, Nagma Mallick, met with Japan’s State Minister for Disaster Management, Akama Jiro, in Tokyo on Monday to deepen discussions on cooperation in disaster risk reduction and resilience.
In an update posted on X, the Indian Embassy in Tokyo stated that the two sides reaffirmed their intent to strengthen collaboration on disaster preparedness and long-term resilience frameworks.
This meeting continues Mallick’s series of diplomatic engagements aimed at reinforcing the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership.
On December 18, she held talks with Kiuchi Minoru, Japan’s Minister of State for Economic and Fiscal Policy, where they exchanged views on the economic dimension of bilateral cooperation.
Mallick also met Yasutoshi Nishimura, Member of Japan’s House of Representatives and Chairman of the Japan-India Parliamentary Friendship Group, to discuss shared interests and ways to boost parliamentary exchanges between the two nations.
Prior to these meetings, on December 15, Mallick called on Fukushiro Nukaga, Speaker of Japan’s House of Representatives, and reviewed multiple aspects of bilateral ties.
The ongoing diplomatic outreach follows a bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart Sanae Takaichi during the G20 Summit in Johannesburg. The leaders discussed expanding cooperation in fields including innovation, defence, talent mobility and trade, underscoring the strategic importance of the partnership.
India and Japan elevated their partnership over the decades — from a Global Partnership in 2000, to a Strategic and Global Partnership in 2006, and a Special Strategic and Global Partnership in 2014. Defence and security collaboration remains a key pillar of the relationship, alongside increasing focus on disaster prevention and resilience.
