The counting of votes for the Maharashtra Local Body Elections 2025 is underway, and early trends indicate a strong lead for the ruling Mahayuti alliance. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis claimed a “clear victory” for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), stating that voters have responded positively to the alliance’s development-focused governance.
Fadnavis thanked voters and party workers, adding that the results reflect “confidence in the Mahayuti’s leadership.” BJP leaders expressed confidence that the alliance will secure a majority across key district and municipal local bodies.
Meanwhile, the Opposition raised concerns over alleged irregularities and accused the Election Commission of failing to ensure transparency. Several Opposition leaders demanded an inquiry into reported glitches in Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and other procedural lapses.
The Election Commission dismissed the allegations, reaffirming that the polling process was conducted fairly and according to established guidelines.
Vote counting continues in major regions including Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Nashik, and Kolhapur. Full and final results are expected later in the day.
The counting of votes for the Maharashtra civic elections has started, and the state is closely watching the outcome of contests across 286 municipal councils and nagar panchayats. Counting began at 10 am today.
The polls were conducted in two stages:
- 263 local bodies voted on December 2
- and the remaining 23 councils, along with some vacant seats, went to polls recently after court-directed delays.
The elections largely saw a contest between the ruling BJP-led Mahayuti alliance and the Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi. The results are expected to signal political momentum ahead of the municipal corporation elections scheduled later.
Key councils to watch
- Baramati
- Ambernath
These areas are being seen as politically significant due to high-profile contests and voter mobilization.
Voter turnout highlights
Polling took place across urban and semi-urban pockets throughout the two phases:
- Overall first phase turnout: 67.6%
- Second phase turnout: 63.02%
- Baramati council turnout: 67%
- Phursungi-Uruli Devachi: 59.7%
Two councils — Angar (Solapur) and Dondaicha (Dhule) — declared winners without voting, as candidates there faced no opposition.
Reports of violence and irregularities
Despite mostly peaceful polling, several districts witnessed disturbances:
- Ambernath saw a police lathi-charge after clashes erupted between rival groups. Authorities detained 208 women alleged to be impersonators—a charge they denied.
- In Nanded, allegations of cash-for-votes triggered FIRs.
- Scattered clashes between BJP, Shiv Sena, and Congress workers were reported in other locations.
With counting underway, parties continue to monitor district-wise trends as Maharashtra waits for official results.
