Batting Blitz Has India Primed for West Indies in Kolkata

It may have taken time to strike the right balance, but India finally look to have locked in their ideal batting combination at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

A ruthless display against Zimbabwe in Chennai showcased India’s depth and firepower, with all of the top six contributing to a record-breaking total. The emphatic win has set up a winner-takes-all clash against the West Indies at Eden Gardens, where the final knockout berth will be decided.

Top Order Sets the Tone

The new opening pair of Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson provided the early damage, stitching together a rapid stand that blew Zimbabwe off course. Abhishek’s fluent 55 and Samson’s brisk 24 ensured India dominated the Powerplay, applying immediate pressure with a left-right combination.

The momentum never dipped as Ishan Kishan (38) and Suryakumar Yadav (33) powered through the middle overs, before Hardik Pandya (50)* and Tilak Varma (44)* delivered a brutal finish. The result was 256/4 — the highest total of the tournament so far and the second-highest score in T20 World Cup history.

Karthik Backs the Opening Pair

Former India wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik, speaking to ICC Digital, believes the Abhishek–Samson opening combination should be retained for the must-win Kolkata clash.

He highlighted how the right-left pairing disrupted Zimbabwe’s bowling plans, even forcing them to avoid using off-spin with the new ball — a clear sign the matchup favoured India.

Karthik also praised Samson’s ability to capitalize once Abhishek set the tempo, noting that while consistency at this level is rare, Samson’s best often coincides with India cruising toward imposing totals.

Eyes on Eden Gardens

With confidence soaring and batting depth firing in unison, India head to Kolkata knowing another strong start could overwhelm the West Indies. Under lights at Eden Gardens, with a charged crowd behind them, India’s newly-settled batting order may prove decisive.
